Industry Discussion Forum: The future of custody roadmap

  |     |

An industry consensus on what the future of the custody industry should look like has emerged over recent years: it’s digital, it’s quicker and it’s more efficient.

When you dig deeper into these umbrella themes you see the trends of digital assets, technology, reduced settlement times, collaboration, data, automation and other new asset classes or market trends such as private markets and retailisation.

But while we know what the end goals are, how do we get to them?

This panel will explore the next steps in reaching the industry’s desired goals:

  • Digital assets: Have the floodgates opened? We’ve been talking about the servicing of digital assets for some time now, but the rescinding of SAB 121 in the US made really have been the tipping point for an industry that was ready when called upon to servicing this burgeoning asset class. Why has this been such a transitional moment?
  • In addition to the recent development in the US, on a global scale – does the industry view stable coins as a genuine proxy for commercial bank money?
  • T+1 certainty in Europe – now the work begins. The EU, UK and Switzerland have confirmed their transition to T+1 will occur in October 2027 – but what can we tick off the to-do list in 2025? With two and a half years to go, it is critical work begins now – so what changes should participants make, what should infrastructures make and what milestones should the industry be hitting in the short-term for a transition that will be reliant on the whole market adapting.
  • AI – how is it being used now compared with how we think it can be used in the future and what are the benefits/risks of generative AI? How will institutions build, buy and partner to realise AI’s full potential? We ask our speakers to highlight their #1 AI use case.
  • How do sub-custodians meet the changing needs of global custodians at a time where relationships are becoming ever more regionalised and consolidated?
  • Data is an area where new processing and analytics tools are coming to the fore, but clients will inevitably continue to demand more customisable services in the future – what is the next evolution of data services and how do we reach that future?
  • Tracking growth sectors – whether it’s individual markets, regions or new asset classes, what steps are needed to maximise potential, and how will asset servicers pave the way for their growth?
  • How else does the industry need to adapt and evolve and what are the steps to getting there?

Speakers to be announced in the coming weeks.

This event is free to attend for all Global Custodian readers. While this event is linked to our awards, this panel discussion is also open to those not attending the evening ceremony.
