In an effort to diversify its product offerings, Carlyle Group, a large private equity firm, says it plans to launch a new hedge fund.

Carlyle’s announcement follows a growing trend among the hedge fund and private equity industries to offer products across their traditional asset management lines.

Carlyle, which currently manages $42 billion, is reported to be looking at Ralph Reynolds, the head of proprietary trading at Deutsche Bank, as the possible leader of the fund.

The new fund would mark the its second foray into the world of hedge funds. It started a fund of funds in 2001, which was sold to the firm’s management two years later.
