OneChicago reported that open interest set a new record of 1,511,016 contracts, topping the 1.5-million mark for the first time. Open interest is the total number of contracts that have not yet been offset or taken to delivery.

Year-to-date volume is now 5,177,091 contracts, 189% ahead of the same period in 2004.

“Our open interest today is more than five times the level we were at a year ago,” said Marty Doyle, president of OneChicago. “And as we wind up the year, we are close to tripling our 2004 volume total.”

Each single stock contract is equivalent to 100 shares of the underlying stock or exchange-traded fund.
