Northern Trust has become the first global asset servicer to launch a Chinese language internet portal on its website, giving institutional clients the ability to access detailed reports on their global custody portfolios online.

The portal has been developed in Simplified Chinese and is an electronic ‘doorway’ into Passport, Northern Trust’s online, institutional-client reporting system. Previously, Chinese language users navigated through English web pages, but they are now automatically routed through Chinese pages that display the options available for accessing and customising their reports.

“In 2005, Northern Trust was the first global asset servicer to provide global custody portfolio reporting in Chinese to institutional clients. This latest innovation takes things a step further by dramatically improving the accessibility of these targeted reports to institutional Chinese clients who are more comfortable using Chinese,” says Kevin Tan, chief representative, Northern Trust, Beijing.

“The range and quality of Northern Trust’s reports meet the diverse needs of our clients, and are very important to our QDII clients for their investment decision-making process. We are very excited that we can now take full advantage of them. We are delighted with the speed of Northern Trust’s response to our requests for a Chinese portal,” adds Pei Xuemin, deputy senior manager Global Custody Department, China’s Bank of Communications.

By the end of 2007, Northern Trust plans to launch a further 20 Chinese language reports online, aimed at both investment manager and institutional clients. These new reports will also be accessible through the new Chinese portal.
