Northern Trust Global Investments (NTGI), the asset management arm of Chicago-based Northern Trust Corporation, has hired Joe Hemmant as a Manager Research Analyst in its expanding manager of managers team in London. Mr. Hemmant is a member of the team responsible for researching managers in the UK and Continental Europe to identify those that are likely to be awarded assets to manage through NTGI’s manager of managers funds.
“Earlier this year, we re-evaluated the structure of our team to ensure we are in the best position to support our clients’ requirements and the future growth of our business,” says Tony Earnshaw, head of NTGI’s manager of managers business in Europe, Middle East and Asia. “Joe is an excellent addition and brings skills, expertise and experience that complement those of our existing team.”
Mr. Hemmant joined Northern Trust from Skandia Life where he was a manager researcher for over three years. Previously, he was an equities and fixed income analyst at Merrill Lynch Investment Managers.
“Our philosophy is to adopt a style neutral approach to portfolio management which means that we combine managers with different styles with a view to reducing style risk and lowering volatility in the short-term performance of our funds, thereby protecting our clients’ asset values over the long term,” says Earnshaw. “We typically use no more than four managers per fund – which is different to some of our peers. Given NTGI’s team researches many hundreds of managers around the world, identifying the small number that will join our programme underlines the need for high quality research and a detailed understanding of what will make a manager ‘blend’ successful.”
