Northern Trust has appointed Sally Surgeon to head up its office in Sydney, in addition to her existing role as head of client services for Australasia.

Surgeon took up the role at the beginning of the month and will be responsible for industry, client and consultant relationships in the city.

She will continue to report to Madeleine Senior, head of the Australasia region at Northern Trust.

“Sally has been instrumental in growing our client base across the region and we are delighted to appoint her to lead our Sydney office where, drawing on her experience, she will focus on continuing to deepen relationships with our clients and the industry and drive momentum for our expanding business,” said Senior.

Surgeon initially joined Northern Trust in 2005 and has held roles in both London and Australia.

She also had a 12-year spell at State Street between 1993 and 2005.

Surgeon’s appointment is the latest development for Northern Trust in Australia following the opening of a second office in the country after its acquisition of Aviate Global in May last year.

Northern Trust also revealed earlier this year it had retained the custody mandate for the AUS $40 billion Australian government employee and defence force pension fund, known as the Commonwealth Superannuation Corporation (CSC).

The endorsement came five years after Northern Trust was initially appointed as the CSC’s preferred custodian.
