According to research by BACS, the automated payments clearing house owned by the major banks in the United Kingdom, corporate Britain is wasting 100 million a year paying over half the 170 million expenses claims it receives by cheque. If they paid them by Direct Debit instead, says BACS, it would save 1 on each claim. But then BACS would say that, wouldn’t it? Much more interesting is the accompanying news that, while most expenses claims are for travel, hotels and entertaining clients, there are some seriously anally retentive employees out there: BACS heard of claims for toothpaste, CDs, cinema tickets, contact lenses and doughnuts.
