Roy Zimmerhansl of Zimmerhansl Consulting Services and Andrew Howieson of Howieson Consulting have launched a survey on the current use of European ETFs in securities financing as part of a wider study on the subject.

The premise to the White Paper is that the use of European ETFs as trading instruments is profoundly impacted and limited by perceived restrictions on ETF liquidity and usefulness as a component of firms trading inventories. Further, this lack of development is likely to continue due to the interdependence of the conceptual linkages and the silo-based approach to resolution of each of the individual players.

This ground-breaking study will evaluate the current use of European ETFs in securities finance and collateral management; identify the benefits that increased ETF usage would bring to market participants and recommend market practice and structural changes required to maximize their use. The breadth of institutional stakeholders in the ETF market place includes investors, market makers, hedge funds, proprietary traders, securities lending firms, prime brokers, tri-party providers, repo market participants and collateral givers and takers of all types.

We have been working on the white paper for a period and have today launched a survey as part of the information gathering process, said Zimmerhansl. There are questions in the survey for each market participant and the opinions and attitudes gathered through the responses will play an important role in assessing the market as it stands today.
