Canadian stocks rose on Thursday as gold, energy and technology saw increasingly strong support from investors.
ATI Technologies, Inc. bounded ahead as speculation increased about a possible joining between the company and Advanced Micro Services. Though neither party would comment about the possibility of a merger, the two technology companies could make an announcement in the coming weeks.
Overall, the Canadian economy leapt ahead by a 3.8% annual rate in the first quarter of 2006, Statistics Canada says, exceeding a number of analysts’ expectations. The country’s gross domestic product also expanded 0.9% on a quarterly basis.
