Trading volume on Eurex US, the fully-electronic U.S. futures and options exchange, continues to grow, with monthly trading volume in August reaching over one million contracts for the first time. In August, trading volume on Eurex US rose 56 percent to total 1,047,283 contracts, up from 673,180 contracts In July and up 1,800 percent from 58,134 contracts in June. This is the second consecutive growth in monthly volume since the launch of the exchange’s initiative to further enhance trading activity in U.S. Treasury futures in July. Daily average volume traded on the exchange in August rose to 47,604 contracts, up 49 percent from 32,056 contracts in July, and up from 2,768 contracts in June. Eurex US recorded open interest of 52,855 contracts on August 31.
Eurex US also saw record trading volumes on August 31, with total daily trading volume reaching 74,280 contracts. The previous daily record of 61,958 contracts was set on July 21. Trading in the 10 year U.S. Treasury future also reached a new daily record of 46,536 contracts. The previous record was 32,720 contracts, set on August 4. Furthermore, the first wholesale trade was executed on Eurex US on August 31. Eurex US recently introduced modifications to its wholesale trading facility, designed to stimulate trading activity in over-the-counter (OTC) wholesale trades on the exchange and to further increase the diversity of trading on Eurex US.
“Liquidity on Eurex US and participation in our market continues to increase,” says Satish Nandapurkar, CEO of Eurex US. “Liquidity during the roll has been excellent. Trading volume has surged, open interest continues to grow and our order book continues to become more diverse. Ten new members joined the exchange in August alone, seven from the U.S. and three from Europe.”
Eurex US opened its market for trading on February 8, 2004 and currently lists futures and options on 2-, 5- and 10-year Treasury notes and on 30-year Treasury bonds. With the introduction of the Global Clearing Link, Eurex US will expand its offering to include futures and options on Euro-denominated interest rate and index products. These products will include benchmark European products such as the German fixed income product suite Bund, Bobl and Schatz as well as products on the leading European indices DAX and DJ Euro STOXX 50.
