CHICAGO – Chicago Mercantile Exchange set several FX volume records Thursday, including a new total FX volume record of 748,050 contracts, representing $87 billion in notional value.

CME surpassed the previous record of 679,700 futures and options contracts traded achieved in Dec. 6, 2004.

Electronic trading accounted for a significant percentage of Wednesday’s volume with record volume of 455,039 futures and options on futures contracts traded on the CME Globex electronic trading platform. This broke the previous CME electronic FX volume record of 401,941 contracts set on Dec. 8, 2004.

Wednesday’s record represents $55 billion in notional value.

A record-breaking 243,701 CME Euro FX futures contracts traded yesterday representing a notional value of $37.3 billion. This overtook the previous record of 233,181 CME Euro FX futures contracts, set on June 1, 2005. CME also set new records in its British Pound futures with 58,858 contracts traded electronically and a total record for combined floor and electronic trading of 87,140 British pound contracts.

The CME Swiss Franc futures contracts reached a new electronic volume record, with 53,574 contracts trading yesterday and a total combined floor and electronic trading record of 75,854 Swiss Franc contracts.
