A young bank worker in Greater Manchester drank himself to death in a drinking contest, an inquest has heard.

David Reid, 22, from Levenshulme, and a friend drank half-bottles of tequila and whisky, margharita cocktails and cans of beer in a 45-minute drinking session.

The Bank of New York Mellon worker was carried to bed after saying he could not drink any more. Hours later he was found dead.

A blood test found he was seven times over the drink-drive limit.

The Bank of New York Mellon opened its doors to Manchester in 2005, and since then “has created a vibrant and diverse culture in the heart of the Piccadilly area,” says the banks website.

The bank chose Manchester “because it has an excellent transport and business infrastructure, a wide and deep pool of talent, and it aligns with regulatory and customer expectations of diversifying our business locations,” says Tim Keaney, then executive vice president and head of Europe, The Bank of New York.

In the UK, The Bank of New York Mellon employs approximately 3,000 staff and currently has offices in London, Swindon, Liverpool, Manchester and Edinburgh.

Recording a verdict of misadventure, the The Deputy Coroner for Manchester, Leonard Gorodkin, says Reid died from alcohol poisoning.
