Vega Asset Management says that Julian Barrowcliffe has joined the firm’s New York office as a Managing Director. In this role, he will manage a new commodities trading fund for the firm.

“Julian is widely recognized as one of the top commodities traders in the business. His experience and professionalism are a great addition to the Vega team,” says Jon Berg, chief executive officer of Vega Asset Management (USA) LLC. “We believe that adding a commodities component to Vega’s overall portfolio will positively enhance our performance from a risk/reward standpoint. Julian’s principally a relative value trader and that’s completely in line with Vega’s approach to other markets, making him a great fit for the firm.”

Barrowcliffe joins Vega Asset Management from Bank of America, where he has been Managing Director and Global Head of Energy Trading since 1999. During his tenure at Bank of America, Barrowcliffe managed a global derivatives business and traded a portfolio of relative-value positions in crude oil and refined products.

Barrowcliffe started his career at Shell International Trading Company in London as a crude oil trader. Since then, he has led commodities trading teams at leading institutions, including Bankers Trust, Merrill Lynch and Cinergy Capital & Trading.

“This position gives me a unique opportunity to apply my trading skills in an entrepreneurial setting,” says Barrowcliffe. “I look forward to putting together a new team at Vega while working alongside a well-established, highly regarded team of professionals.”

Barrowcliffe earned a bachelor’s degree with honors in Business Administration and French from London University of Technology, UK.
