United Airlines parent UAL says that if interest rates fall and the market value of its pension funds continue to decline, it may have to record a charge of more than $1.5 billion. The firm said it could be required to contribute about $5 billion to its defined benefit pension plans by the end of 2008. The firm didn’t make cash contributions to the plan in 2001 and 2002, relying instead on its credit balance to meet the required minimum.
