Tom Merchant has been appointed Chief Executive of Universities Superannuation Scheme Limited, the UK’s third largest private sector pension scheme, following the retirement of David Chynoweth.

Merchant, aged 55, joins Liverpool-based USS after four years as an independent management consultant advising on major acquisitions, public-to-private transactions, providing interim management services and advising leading finance houses on their investment and asset management. During his business career he has lived and worked on four continents and has held posts in Dubai, Sydney and Cape Town. Born in South Africa, he gained a B.Sc (Eng) at Cape Town University where he began his business career with a local firm of consulting engineers. He holds an MBA from Cranfield School of Management, UK.

Tom Merchant has been responsible for the development of commercial and industrial buildings, hotels, shopping centres and leisure projects. In the financial field, he has worked with due diligence teams on corporate finance projects and led change management programmes. He is married with three children.
