Northern Trust has appointed Thomas Benzmiller as Managing Director of the Northern Trust Company of Hong Kong.

In his new role, Benzmiller will direct Northern Trust’s strategic development and day-to-day business operations in Hong Kong, and he will lead the effort to build up Northern Trust’s asset management presence in Asia.

Previously, Benzmiller was Director, Corporate Markets in the Large Corporate Segment of Northern Trust Global Investments (NTGI) in Chicago. Prior to joining Northern Trust in 2001, Benzmiller was the Chief Investment Officer for Honda of America.

Benzmiller will report to Lawrence Au, General Manager in Singapore for the Asia-Pacific region at Northern Trust, and Barry Sagraves, CEO of Northern Trust Global Investments (Europe) in London.

“Northern Trust has over the years established a very strong reputation in Asia by providing high quality service to our clients in asset servicing,” says Lawrence Au. “We continue to actively expand the suite of solutions Northern Trust offers to institutional investors including a wide range of investment-related products. We are pleased to utilize Tom’s experience in investments and as a plan sponsor to develop a closer link between asset servicing and asset management services to deliver solutions that bring high added value to the institutional investor in Asia.”

Sagraves says TGI is now the ninth largest asset manager in the world, and that the firm expects strong growth in Asia. “We offer a complete set of capabilities to the institutional investor, including Manager of Managers, Index and Enhanced Index, Active Equity and Fixed Income and other services such as Securities Lending, Commission Recapture and Transition Management,” he says. “Under Tom’s leadership, we look forward to building relationships with the sponsor and consultant community in a broader capacity.”
