SWIFT messages peaked at more than 20 million messages on May 31, the financial messaging company said today. Half of the messages were payments.

Messages in the Americas peaked at 4.29 million, a 15.3% increase over average daily volume in the region so far this year.

The peak highlights SWIFTs recent growth as a result of a streamlining transformation.

Reaching this milestone does not come as a surprise, says Lzaro Campos, CEO of SWIFT. We have seen volumes edging upwards since the beginning of the year. Over the last five years, total message volumes have almost doubled, continually increasing year on year from 2007 with the exception of 2009 when there was a dip from which we have now fully recovered.

In his five-year tenure as CEO, Campos, who is leaving SWIFT at the end of this month after 25 years at the company, has seen the company nearly double its volumes while cutting costs by 30% and prices by 50%. Campos will be replaced by Gottfried Leibrant, currently head of marketing at SWIFT.

Continued growth demonstrates that SWIFT is uniquely placed within the international financial community to enhance efficiency and performance, reduce risk and lower costs for its member, SWIFT says.
