State Street, whose long honeymoon with investors has begun to sour, is to buy back 15 million shares. The decision replaces a previous authorization of 8 million shares approved way back in June 1995, which was successively updated through December 2001 to include 43 million shares, of which 41.6 million shares have been purchased. The new authorization will be used to offset the impact of employee benefit plans, as well as for other corporate purposes.
