Peter Christmas, former managing director and chief relationship officer of Pershing Limited, has moved to Standard Chartered as head of Southern Asia Sales, Investors and Intermediaries.
Christmas has been working at Standard Chartered for over a month, previously holding overall management responsibility for Pershings client-facing functions in Europe.
Christmas sees comparable trends for intermediates on both sides of the globe. A lot of the questions being asked are very similar; looking at the infrastructure of the local markets, looking for service providers to give them a cost efficient service in those markets. I dont think it is greatly different from the markets I have seen in Europe, he says. From an investor perspective, I would see things as different. You have local investors who have a lot of knowledge about their own market, and are looking for help going outside of those markets. You then have a number of global investors who want knowledge of the local markets. Whereas in Europe investors have a fair idea of the markets they are operating in.
For Standard Chartered, the opportunities in Asia are facilitating movement from one market to another. We work in a lot of markets, and we provide a very effective service in those, Christmas explains. There is an opportunity to help someone, lets say, in Thailand, who wants to invest in Korea or in India. Another opportunity is looking at global investors moving into this market, and helping them navigate their way through what are difficult markets.
Prior to joining Pershing, Christmas was UK head of sales and relationship management at BNP Paribas Securities Services, where he led the development and execution of their UK sales strategy. Christmas has also led sales and relationship management initiatives for Mellon Bank, State Street Bank and Trust Company, and J.P. Morgan Securities.
