NYSE SmartPool has overtaken BATS Europe and Liquidnet to become the third largest dark pool in Europe. Turquoise and Chi-Delta remain the largest dark pools.
Matched volume in May of 2.6 billion represented an increase of 374% from the previous month. The number of trades also increased by 357%.
The announcement builds dramatically on previous record volumes. In Q1 2010 SmartPool’s matched volume reached 1 billion, an increase of %104 over Q4 2009.
Part of the growth stems from the migration of Smartpool to NYSEs Universal Trading Platform, completed in November 2009.
According to the Thomson Reuters Equity Market Share Service, SmartPool reported dark market share of 16% of MSCI EMU Large Cap Index, 14.8% of the Dow Jones STOXX 600 and 18.3% of the DJ STOXX 50 during May.
SmartPool was launched by NYSE Euronext in partnership with HSBC, J.P.Morgan and BNP Paribas in Febrary 2009.
