Heads of state from East Africa have agreed to work towards a common market and a single currency by 2012.

“The common market will allow for the free circulation of goods and movement of people within the region,” says a Standard Bank Spokesman.

This will precede a move to a political federation with a federal president and parliament.

Negotiations among partner states will start in September.
