Roy Zimmerhansl has been appointed as global head of Securities Lending, HSBC Securities Services (HSS), effective March 1 2013.
In this new role, Zimmerhansl will lead the area as HSBC increases its investment in the client securities lending business in response to increased client demand. Zimmerhansl will be based in London and report to John van Verre head of Global Custody and Treasury Services, HSS.
Zimmerhansls appointment follows his consultancy work for HSSs securities lending team, Global Custodian understands. He developed a strategic plan for the team and was subsequently asked to join the bank to implement that plan.
The new position sees Zimmerhansl taking over from Wayne Burlingham, whose title becomes head of Securities Lending Product Management. Nick Thomas will continue in his position as head of Specialised Sales, with a specific focus on securities lending. Both Burlingham and Thomas will report to Zimmerhansl.
Commenting on his appointment, Van Verre said: Zimmerhansl is a well-known figure in the securities lending industry and brings with him a wealth of experience. He has held senior positions at leading firms across the spectrum of securities lending including prime brokers, agent lenders and an electronic trading platform. His knowledge and experience in this business will be instrumental in achieving our strategic objective to develop a leading client proposition. Please join me in welcoming Roy to HSBC.
Zimmerhansl said: I am excited about joining the HSBC team. This is a unique opportunity to help the bank achieve its client-focused objectives through continued expansion of its securities lending business.
Within his career Zimmerhansl has had a specific focus on securities lending, ETFs, Emerging Markets, electronic trading platforms and custody. In addition to leading existing businesses, he is also experienced in launching new business lines at banks.
Zimmerhansl is currently a consultant for several businesses including his own, Zimmerhansl Consulting Services, which he started in November 2008. Since then he has also been a product specialist for software solutions company Trading Apps since February 2011 and owner of FinTuition, the provider of training services to the securities finance business and alternative investment industry since August 2009.
Prior to his consulting ventures, Zimmerhansl was head of Electronic Securities Lending at ICAP (March 2006 to October 2008) where he spearheaded the launch of i-Sec, ICAP’s electronic platform for equity securities lending. Here he had overall responsibility for the design, sales and implementation of that platform.
Before ICAP, Zimmerhansl spent time on the borrowing side of securities lending, as director at Deutsche Bank (from 2002 to 2005), as managing director at Rabobank (from 1998 to 2002) and as director at Nomura (from 1993 to 1998).
Zimmerhansl has also worked on the agent lending side within major US and Canadian banks. From 1988 to 1993, he was vice president at Chase Manhattan and before that global head of Custody Sales at CIBC (1987 to 1988) in London. Zimmerhansl joined CIBC from Royal Bank of Canada, where he worked in the product management team from 1984 to 1987 in Toronto. He began as career as account co-ordinator at the Canadian Depository for Securities Limited, where he worked from 1980 to 1984.
