Based on the aggregate turnover statistics, a total volume of 327,8 billion euros was traded on the German stock exchanges in July about 4 percent more than in the previous month (June 2002: 315 billion euros). The July total comprises 264.3 billion euros in equities, warrants and exchange-traded funds as well as 63.5 billion euros in fixed-income securities.

A new record was set in the number of trades on Xetra in July with a total of 6.5 million trades (November 2001: 5.1 million trades); this corresponds to a 76 percent increase compared with the same month of last year. It is the best performance achieved in the number of trades on the Xetra electronic trading system since the system was launched.

According to the order-book statistics, which are based on single counting of all transactions in the Xetra order book and broker-supported trading on the floor, the equities turnover on all German stock exchanges in July amounted to 102.8 billion euros; this corresponds to an increase in volume of about 14 percent compared with the month before (June 2002: 90.1 billion euros). Of the total volume traded in equities as a whole, 96.3 billion euros was posted in German equities, and some 6.5 billion euros in foreign equities. About 94 percent of the volume in domestic shares was traded through Xetra and another 5 percent in trading on the floor of the Frankfurt Stock Exchange (FWB Frankfurter Wertpapierbrse). In foreign shares, about 90 percent of the total volume was posted on Xetra and the Frankfurt trading floor.

In July, the Xetra share of trading in the DAX blue chips was about 96 percent. In the MDAX (mid-cap DAX) stocks, some 85 percent of the volume was traded on Xetra, some 52 percent of the SDAX (small-cap DAX) volume and about 75 percent of the volume in Neuer Markt stocks.

Siemens was the most active DAX blue chip in July with 9.4 billion euros traded in its shares. Altana was the leading MDAX stock with 357 million euros in volume, and Qiagen topped the list of Neuer Markt stocks with 336 million euros in shares traded. In the SMAX (small-cap quality) segment, Leoni ranked first with some 14 million euros in share turnover. The highest-volume exchange-traded fund in July was again the DAX EX with about 1.1 billion euros in turnover. Intel was the leading stock in the Xetra US Stars segment, with a volume of 34 million euros traded in its shares; Nokia ranked highest among the Xetra European Stars, with 1.1 billion euros in volume traded.
