Reactions, the financial magazine for the global insurance market, has announced the winners of the Reactions Awards 2006. Each year, Reactions conducts an extensive poll of its readers to find out who they think are the best firms, deals and individuals in the global reinsurance market.

There were 26 awards categories in total this year. Two new categories – broking chief executive of the year and global life reinsurer of the year – were added.

The reinsurance categories were dominated by the world’s top two reinsurers. Munich Re was named global non-life reinsurer of the year, and also walked away with the speciality lines reinsurer of the year award. Swiss Re was voted property-catastrophe reinsurer of the year, casualty reinsurer of the year, and global life reinsurer of the year.

Inga Beale, chief executive of Converium, was named reinsurance chief executive of the year.

The broker categories were also dominated by two firms. Benfield claimed the awards for best and most innovative reinsurer of the year, and Willis was named the best and most innovative insurance broker.

Benfield chief executive Grahame Chilton was named broking chief executive of the year.

On the primary insurance side, American International Group was named global primary insurer of the year. It also picked up awards for the best primary insurer in North America and the Asia-Pacific. Allianz was voted best primary insurer in Europe, Mapfre the best primary insurer in Latin America, and Santam the best primary insurer in South Africa.

Ramani Ayer, chief executive of The Hartford, was named primary insurance chief executive of the year.

Other winners include: Standard & Poor’s (rating agency of the year), Goldman Sachs (investment bank of the year), LeBoeuf, Lamb, Greene & MacRae (law firm of the year) and AIR Worldwide (risk modeller of the year).

In addition, awards where presented to the winners of Reactions polls of underwriters and brokers in Bermuda, The Captive Industry and Reactions annual legal survey.
