Reports indicate that private equity firms are considering approaches for Penguin Publishing as part of a growing interest in the media sector.

Though the publishing company is not officially on the market, several firms already have courted Penguin via its parent company Pearson Plc, which also owns The Financial Times, asking whether it would be interested in selling the iconic pioneer of the mass-market paperback. Penguin is currently estimated to be worth around $1.53 billion.

Reported suitors include Cinven, Candover and Permira.

Simon & Schuster and HarperCollins are also said to be receiving overtures from private equity firms.
