Northern Trust has expanded its Investment Risk and Analytical Services (IRAS) team in London with the appointment of Jim Trotter as Senior Vice President, Head of Investment Risk and Analytical Services.

He replaces Jan Nicolaou, who becomes Senior Vice President, Head of Strategic Development within the IRAS team in a newly created role. Both Trotter and Nicolaou report dually to Nigel Bloomer, Senior Vice President, Head of the asset servicing group’s Client Service Team in London, and Paul D’Ouville, Senior Vice President, Global Head of IRAS in Chicago.

Jim Trotter is responsible for the sale of Northern Trust’s performance measurement and risk services to UK and continental European pension funds, private corporations and public authorities. He joins from Investit, where he was a Principal Consultant in the Performance and Risk division. Prior to this, he spent five years at Merrill Lynch Investment Managers where, latterly, he was Head of the Performance and Portfolio Analysis team. Previously he worked for 11 years at the WM Company as a client manager.

Jan Nicolaou will now focus solely on developing Northern Trust’s performance and risk outsourcing solutions for asset managers in the UK and continental Europe. Nicolaou joined Northern Trust in 1998 to develop its IRAS offering, currently one of Northern Trust’s fastest growing business areas. Under her leadership, the IRAS group’s client base has grown by 425% over the past five years and now services 127 clients in London.

“I am delighted that Jim Trotter and Jan Nicolaou are working together to manage the growth of our IRAS business,” says Nigel Bloomer. “Jim’s vast experience and expertise within the performance and risk area will be invaluable as we look to expand and develop the excellent platform built over the past seven years by Jan Nicolaou, who now brings her strategic vision and creativity to a new role aimed specifically at investment managers. Both of these appointments reflect the increased demand for, and sophistication of our IRAS group. Our IRAS business continues to be highly successful and is growing in line with strategy. This growth in demand is being driven by increased regulation and pressure on trustees to reduce costs and maximise efficiencies by monitoring the performance of their funds and managers. They are also in line with our strategy to further enhance our capabilities in this area as a key differentiator in the solutions we provide to our institutional and investment manager clients.”
