Northern Trust has appointed a new head of its business in Australia and New Zealand, promoting one of its long-term executives to the position.

Leon Stavrou will take on the role effective 1 October and will be responsible for overseeing the overall strategic direction for Northern Trust’s business, providing solutions to its corporate and institutional clients within the region.

Stavrou brings over 20 years’ experience of working within the asset servicing industry to the role, with the last 11 years spent at Northern Trust.

Before joining Northern Trust, Stavrou held managerial positions at National Australia Bank Asset Servicing.

Most recently, Stavrou acted as a global services executive responsible for Northern Trust’s asset servicing operations across Australia. He was also responsible for ensuring the provision and development of Northern Trust’s range of asset servicing solutions to clients across Asia Pacific.

In his new role, Stavrou will report to Angelo Calvitto, who he succeeds after Calvitto was named head of Northern Trust in Asia Pacific earlier this year.

“Leon is a proven and trusted leader and we are pleased to appoint him to lead our business in the region. His experience working with sophisticated institutional clients with unique requirements will support us as we continue our business momentum and bring innovative solutions for our clients across Australia and New Zealand,” said Calvitto.

Stavrou’s appointment follows previous leadership positions appointed earlier this year. Alongside Calvitto, Northern Trust named Caroline Higgins as head of Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan. Additionally, Iain Carey was named head of global fund services for Asia.
