A new deputy solicitor has been appointed to the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

Michael A Conley, described by SEC solicitor Jacob Stillman as “a superb legal craftsman”, will take up his role in the appellate group – part of the SEC’s office of the general counsel.

Before joining the SEC in 2000, Conley – a graduate of Boston University School of Law – specialized in appellate litigation and was the managing partner in the Washington branch of Pillsbury, Madison and Sutro.

“He has demonstrated great skill and judgment, and I am delighted that Michael has agreed to become deputy solicitor,” sasy Stillman.

Earlier this month, the SEC named Robert Khuzami – formerly a federal prosecutor in the state of New York – to the role of director at the SEC’s division of enforcement.

In January, Mary L Schapiro was sworn in as the 29th chairman of the SEC.
