The Nasdaq Stock Market has increased its stake in the London Stock Exchange. Yesterday the US exchange announced it had acquired another 9,790,280 shares in the London Stock Exchange (LSE) at a price of 1,218 pence per share. The consideration represents approximately GBP 119.2 million (c. US$ 219.4 million). In addition to the 38,100,000 shares acquired on 11 April 2006, this acquisition takes NASDAQ’s holding in LSE to 47,890,280 shares or c. 18.7% of the issued share capital of LSE. The move will increase pressure on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) to declare its hand.
