Nasdaq has offered to merge with the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), according to a report in the Wall Street Journal yesterday. The report says that Nasdaq’s chief executive, Robert Greifeld, approached the NYSE three weeks ago, but that no formal proposal has been tabled yet. Nasdaq has suffered since the TMT bubble burst in 2000, recording a loss in the third quarter of this year, while the NYSE is finding its user-owned, user-governed cartel under growing regulatory pressure. Regulators are investigating its floor traders, and the management was replaced after chairman Richard Grasso was ousted in September amend a row over an $188million pay package.
