MFS Investment Management, a subsidiary of Sun Life Financial Inc., has announced that two senior executives are to join the firm in an effort to develop and implement policies and procedures that set new standards in fund governance, regulatory compliance and shareholder protection.

Jeffrey N. Carp is joining MFS as General Counsel and Senior Vice President, with responsibility for all of MFS’ legal affairs. He previously was a Senior Partner with the law firm of Hale and Dorr LLP, with more than 22 years of experience in mutual fund, securities, and corporate law.

Maria D. Dwyer is joining MFS in the new position of Chief Regulatory Officer in charge of compliance, internal audit and fund treasury. A 20-year industry veteran with prior experience at MFS, Dwyer most recently was a senior executive with Fidelity Investments. Both Carp and Dwyer will serve on the firm’s Management Committee, its highest executive body.

“As MFS enhances policies and procedures in fund governance and shareholder protection, we will rely on seasoned professionals such as Jeffrey Carp and Maria Dwyer to help us set the standard for the industry,” said Robert C. Pozen, MFS Non-Executive Chairman. “They will help us address investor concerns while continuing to put shareholders and clients first.”

MFS also announced the hiring of veteran asset manager William P. Douglas as its lead mortgage securities portfolio manager. Douglas joins MFS from Wellington Management Company, where he most recently served as vice president and senior mortgage analyst. Prior to Wellington, he worked from 1988 to 1992 as a risk analyst for Arthur D. Little.
