Thomas Meyer has been seconded to the European Private Equity and Venture Capital Association from the European Investment Fund to develop policy proposals aimed at improving the legislative framework for the venture capital industry.Meyer, co-author of seminal venture capital text Beyond the J-Curve: Managing a Portfolio of Venture Capital and Private Equity Fund, will be on the placement for three years starting in January.

Meyer was most recently responsible for establishing the EIF’s risk management function, focusing on valuation and risk management models and investment strategies for venture capital and funds of funds.

As well as developing policy proposals with EVCA, Meyer will focus on the appropriateness of current methods of venture research, with a focus on industry performance and track record statistics, and work on a campaign to improve the public’s understanding and perception of the venture capital industry’s potential and its limitations, according to a statement.

“Over the next few years, the way in which institutional investors and policymakers view European venture capital will be critical to the industry’s future prosperity,” says Javier Echarri, secretary general of EVCA, . “Thomas’s expertise and in-depth experience in the market will be critical to the clear goals of EVCA’s Venture Platform.”

“The venture capital industry has an important role to play in the commercialisation of European technology and helping to drive business growth and innovation,” says Meyer. “However, to operate effectively it requires an appropriate legislative framework and an improved level of understanding of its activities among institutional investors and the wider world. I will be working with EVCA to achieve these aims.”
