Merrill Lynch Global Private Equity has scaled back its operations by closing its Tokyo office due to a lack of adequate deal flow in the Japanese market, according to reports.

This latest development is yet another example of private equity firms cutting operating costs to weather the economic storm.

According to the firm’s website, MLGPE only ever made one investment in the region, in Tongjitang Chinese Medicines, a modernised traditional Chinese medicine company.

The remainder of MLGPE’s investments were in the US, Europe, Latin America and Australia.

Founded in 1996, MLGPE targets investments of $250 million to $750 million.

The firm’s Tokyo office was reportedly set up in 2005.
