Mellon Financial Corporation announced Kevin L. Shearan, who has held senior technology positions internationally, has been promoted to chief information officer. He will be responsible for Mellon’s technology strategy, applications development, data processing, information security, and data and voice networking. Shearan, 51, who joined Mellon in August 1997, also has been a member of Mellon’s Senior Management Committee since 2001.
“This promotion recognizes Kevin’s leadership role in the continued development and deployment of innovative, powerful business applications that directly benefit our clients,” said Martin G. McGuinn, Mellon chairman and chief executive officer. “He also has been instrumental in overseeing our infrastructure that is designed to protect the information with which our clients have entrusted to us.”
Shearan joined Mellon as head of a newly-formed software engineering group and took the lead in creating a process-oriented culture focused on business software delivery. He was named head of technology delivery and promoted to executive vice president in January 2004. In that role, Shearan was responsible for directing the activities of software engineers and application developers throughout the corporation. He also had oversight of Mellon’s technology strategy and corporate information security.
With more than 30 years service in the information technology industry, he has held senior technology positions with major financial and commercial institutions in the U.S. and Europe, focusing primarily on computer operations, technical services, applications development and computer audit. Prior to joining Mellon, Shearan served as director of technology for the Worldwide Securities Services division of Citicorp. Prior to that, he held technology-related positions with Seagrams UK, Singers UK, the Rank Organization and Lombard North Central.
