Mark Fisher, previously a senior executive with Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS), has been appointed as chairman of ABN Amro by the Dutch bank’s new owners.

However the appointment must be backed by shareholders in a vote that is expected in the next few months.

Fisher joined RBS in 2000 and will take the place of Rijkman Groenink who stepped down earlier this week following the successful bid from the RBS consortium.

RBS chief executive Sir Fred Goodwin, Fortis head Jean-Paul Votron and Juan Inciarte of Santander will join the ABN supervisory board which will continue to be headed by Arthur Martinez.

City AM predicts several high figures to step down from ABN during the forthcoming general meeting, including David Baron de Rothschild.

Groenink’s position was jeopardised after he supported the unsuccessful rival bid from Barclays.
