In Bernie Madoffs first interview, the disgraced banker was surprised that he wasn’t caught sooner. San Francisco attorneys Joseph Cotchett and Nancy Fineman, representing investors who lost money through Madoffs Ponzi scheme, met with the financier at the North Carolina prison where he is serving 150 years for fraud.

Speaking to abcnews.com, the lawyers stated that Madoff was surprised he managed to continue the fraud for so long. “There were several times that I met with the SEC and thought ‘they got me’, Madoff said.

The SEC is expected to publish a review on how they missed the USD65 billion Ponzi scheme.

“It was an extraordinary visit. He was very candid, very open, and answered every one of our questions,” Cotchett said of the five hour meeting. Madoff also believes that investigators have recovered all the money possible from the fraud.

Unsurprisingly, Madoff expressed remorse for his actions.
