Jon Winkelried, President and Co-Chief Operating Officer and a member of the Board of Directors at Goldman Sachs Group, would be retiring effective 31 March 2009.

Winkelried has been with the firm since 1982 and served as President and Co-Chief Operating Officer and a director since June 2006. Prior to that, he served in many roles, including as co-head of our Investment Banking division and co-head of our Fixed Income, Currency and Commodities business. He will continue to be affiliated with the firm as a senior director.

Jon has had a distinguished 26-year career at the firm and has played a key role in helping to establish and build many of our global franchises, says Lloyd C. Blankfein, chairman and CEO, Goldman Sachs Group, Inc.

He has helped to develop the firms global strategy as an advisor, financier and co-investor and mentored many of Goldman Sachs leaders. We thank him for his exceptional contributions to the firm and look forward to continuing to receive his advice and counsel as a senior director of the firm.
