As if to contradict the buoyant mood in the European bond markets, the International Securities Market Association (ISMA) has announced that its 34th Annual General Meeting and Conference will be held not on the Cote d’Azur but in Basel, Switzerland. Formal proceedings will begin at the Messe Basel with ISMA’s general meeting on the morning of Thursday, May 23. Following the AGM, a panel of senior market figures will discuss and debate the theme of ‘Can the first decade of the 21st Century match the trend growth of the late 20th Century?’ The ISMA conference will follow on the morning of Friday May 24. This year’s theme will focus on the extent to which financial markets can genuinely be referred to as “global” or whether political, economic, cultural and regulatory barriers render globalisation more of a fictional notion rather than fact.
