Hedge funds were up an average of 1.12% in May, according to the HedgeFund.net-PerTrac Universes.
The top 25% of hedge funds gained an average of 2.16%, while the bottom 25% of hedge funds were down an average of 0.33% for the month. Technology sector funds, the month’s top performing strategy, were up an average of 4.71% in May. By comparison, the S&P 500 was up 3.00% during the month.
Through May, the year-to-date average loss for hedge funds was 0.02%. The top 25% of hedge funds gained 3.19% for the year-to-date, while the bottom 25% was down 2.66% over the same period. The S&P 500 is down 1.69% since the beginning of 2005.
Hedge funds included in these calculations were down 1.43% on average in April. The top 25% of hedge funds gained an average of 0.07% in April, while the bottom 25% was down an average 2.31% during the same period.
