The Greek Parliament yesterday voted in favour of an amendment allowing non-residents to apply for tax reclamation for Greek Government Bonds until 31 December 2004.

The amendment, which was approved by both PASOK and New Democracy members of parliament, became necessary because – despite the fact that Article 31 of Law 2682/99 states that taxation for non-residents of bonds issued by the Greek State was abolished from 1 January 1999 – the Bank of Greece continued to withhold tax throughout 1999.

“If you have such cases pending, you should contact your custodian bank in Greece and ask them to follow the necessary procedure in order to file a tax reclaim on your behalf,” says a spokeswoman for EFG Eurobank Securities Services in Athens.
