Our Legends embody the pinnacle of excellence within the securities services industry. The Hall of Fame is made up of stalwarts often amassing decades of experience in leading from the forefront and driving positive change across the market.
Chris Rowland
Chris Rowland has made a significant impact on the securities services industry through prominent roles at some of the biggest players in the world of custody.
He is currently executive vice president and head of custody, digital and fund services product at State Street. In the role, he is responsible for establishing the strategy, setting the investment roadmap, and managing the P&L of products provided to our institutional investor clients.
He also has responsibility for State Street’s network management team and setting strategy for State Street’s network of 50 bank relationships. Prior to joining State Street, Rowland worked at JP Morgan for 22 years where he was product executive for custody and the head of EMEA securities services.
Prior to JP Morgan, he worked at BNP Paribas securities services for five years where he led the global relationship management team for financial institution (FI) clients and direct custody sales for the United Kingdom.
Hannah Elson
Hannah Elson has been with JP Morgan for 27 years, making a particularly significant impact as head of global custody, where she has helped to elevate the business to new heights.
During her tenure with JP Morgan, Elson has built up established a reputation for building strong and diverse teams and expertly navigating complex business and market events.
She has helped the asset servicer secure landmark global custody mandates throughout the world, particularly in key regional areas of focus for JP Morgan’s custody business.
Elson is also prominent mentor and advocate for women in the securities industry and leads on the JP Morgan’s wellness and philanthropy efforts, developing partnerships with local organisations and non-profits supporting diversity, inclusion and mental health.
Matthew Bax
Matthew Bax has been a major figure in the world of custody for the past 20 years, holding senior roles across Citi and JP Morgan.
His current role sees him operate as global head, sales and service, for securities services, after formerly being global head for direct custody and clearing.
He joined Citi in 2017 as EMEA head of sales for custody and fund services. He moved to Citi after serving over 13 years at JP Morgan, where he held a number of roles within global custody, fund services and securities lending.
He was head of FX product investor services, before being appointed EMEA head of global custody in 2014. Bax has been one of the constants among its senior ranks during Citi’s standout purple patch within securities services that saw the custodian post 17 consecutive quarters of year-on-year growth.
Tsutomu Yamamoto
Tsutomu Yamamoto has had a decorated career at Mizuho Bank, one of the most consistent performers in Global Custodian’s Agent Banks surveys each year.
Joining Mizuho in 1991, Yamamoto ascended through the ranks, culminating in a role overseeing securities, custody, fund administration for the bank in 2014. He took on more roles in the years to follow, including becoming managing director of Asia & Oceania corporate banking department – which also included the securities business.
He would go on to take on roles including managing executive officer, head of global corporate division and head of global products unit. Since April 2023, Yamamoto has been senior executive officer/managing executive officer, head of global transaction banking unit.
The position sees him hold responsibility for inbound custody at Mizuho Bank, and domestic and outbound custody at Mizuho Trust Bank and Custody Bank of Japan. Yamamoto has B.A. in Business and Commerce from Keio University and also graduated from Stanford University, Graduate School of Business, in 2012.
