The continent of Europe saw at least 170 hedge funds launched during the first half of 2006, an increase of 20 funds over the first half of 2005, according to a survey released by EuroHedge.

Collectively, the new funds raised more than $11.4 billion.

The survey attributes the record number of new hedge funds launched to steady health and vibrancy in Europe’s hedge fund industry.

Though the number of hedge funds launched was higher, the assets raised by the funds dropped from the $13 billion brought in during the first half of 2005.

The reduced assets volume results from the reduced number of large scale or ‘blockbuster’ launches so far in 2006 as compared to 2005, when five European hedge funds launched with assets of $1 billion or more each.
