Euroclear SA/NV announced that Ambrose Murphy will join the Euroclear group on 7 November and assume the position of general counsel and head of the Legal Division on Jan. 1, 2005.

Murphy, who is currently employed as a senior legal adviser at Fortis Bank in Brussels, will also become a member of the Euroclear Group Management Team.

The move follows the decision earlier this year of the current general counsel, Kristen N. Geyer, to leave the company at the end of 2005 to return to the United States. Geyer joined Euroclear in 1998 as deputy general counsel and became general counsel and a member of the management team in 2000.

Pierre Francotte, chief executive officer, Euroclear SA/NV, said, “We are very pleased to welcome Ambrose Murphy to the Euroclear group. In addition to excellent legal skills, he has a wide background in leadership positions and I am confident that he will prove a significant asset to Euroclear. I would also like to pay tribute to Kristen Geyer, who led our legal team with talent and drive through some of the most important developments in our history. We wish her the very best in her future career.”

Prior to working for Fortis, Murphy was general counsel of Citigroup’s global consumer business for Europe, Asia and Africa. Based in Brussels, he managed legal teams covering lending, branch banking, credit cards, investment products, insurance and offshore banking. Before joining Citigroup, Murphy served as deputy general counsel of Travelers Life & Annuity, the US insurance company, and before that, as general counsel of GE Capital Insurance Services, both based in Connecticut.
