Euroclear has appointed the former chief executive officer of Citi’s Transaction Services unit and 38-year industry veteran as its new chairman.

Francesco Vanni d’Archirafi had spent almost four decades with Citigroup, most recently as vice chairman of  banking, capital markets and advisory for EMEA based in London.

The appointment brings to an end a year-long search to find a permanent successor to Marc Antonie Autheman, who stepped down in June 2020 after eight years in the role.

He was replaced in the interim by Harold Finders and Franco Passacantando, who will stay on to help with the transition.

“The role of resilient, robust, efficient and reliable digital financial market infrastructure has never been more important to enable the trusted operation and continued innovation of the capital markets and the global economy,” said Vanni d’Archirafi.

“I look forward to working with shareholders, board members, Lieve Mostrey and the Euroclear management team to continue enhancing the value that Euroclear brings to clients, stakeholders across the post-trade ecosystem and society.”

Over the course of his 38-year career, Vanni d’Archirafi has led numerous businesses, committees and boards in a global career that spanned 38 years at Citi, including that of long-serving chairman for Citibank Europe, and chairman and CEO of Citibank International.

He also serves on the boards of Verti Spa and Citibanamex, and was previously a non-executive director of the LCH Group from 2005 to 2011

Vanni d’Archirafi will join the boards of Euroclear Holding and Euroclear SA/NV as a non-executive director.

The appointment is subject to shareholder approval at the company’s General Meeting of Shareholders on 1 July 2021.

Euroclear has seen a number of changes at the top in recent years with its new CEO, Mostrey, appointed in November 2018, and the chief for its UK and Ireland CSD, Michael Carty, named last summer.
