Euroclear is working hard to dispel its cruel-but-efficient image, so there will be much rejoicing among the spin doctors at Boulevard du Roi Albert II that the Brussels-based ICSD is the inaugural “Brussels Company of the Year.” The award, dreamt up by local promoters of Brussels as a commercial centre, has more than the usual legitimacy: it is determined by the votes of the citizens of Brussels polled by Europe Brussels International (sic), not the volume of advertising expenditure with the award-giver. It is not known what voting incentives were offered to the 1,700 Brussels-based employees of Euroclear, or whether the ballot was secret.
