Dalton Strategic Partnership (DSP), the global investment management firm, has launched the Melchior Selected Trust Canadian Opportunities Fund (MSTCOF), which invests in the growing opportunities being created by Canada’s rich natural resources and healthy economy.
The Fund is the fourth sub-fund of the Luxembourg-registered Melchior Selected Trust. Interward Asset Management, a specialist Canadian investment company based in Toronto, is the advisor to the fund. Interward Capital Advisors was founded by Kim Ward in 1990 following the sale of Wardair Canada Limited. The investment team comprises Kim, President, Andrew Best, Managing Director and Jenifer Rush, Senior Vice President. Kim and Andrew have worked together at Interward for over 16 years.
MSTCOF invests largely in under researched Canadian stocks which are often ignored by global institutions. The Fund’s objective is to achieve longer term capital growth through diversified investment in companies that are registered or carry out a predominant portion of their economic activity in Canada or North America.
The principal fund advised by Interward was launched in January 2001 and closed in June 2006, and returned on an annualised basis 37.4 percent pa in Canadian dollar terms against the Toronto Stock Exchange of 6.7 percent pa. On a year to date basis, Interward continues to outperform the TSX composite index. The Canadian equity market remains one of the key markets for financing small and mid capitalisation natural resources companies. The new fund will give investors the opportunity to benefit from the expertise and track record of this unique Canadian based asset manager.
“In our opinion, natural resources will be a key investment allocation over the next decade,” says Andrew Dalton, the Managing Partner of DSP. “The attractions of Canada in this context are all too clear with its huge reserves of oil, gas and minerals. Canada offers a stable political system with an economy as healthy as you will find in a G7 nation state. Interward with its excellent track record in Canadian markets should be well placed to help foreign investors in this exciting environment.”
“We believe people create value and so we look for companies with strong management who invest in their own companies,” adds Kim Ward, the President of Interward. “We make over 500 company visits a year, which is key to our research. Our relatively concentrated portfolios are structured to take advantage of near term catalysts and do not track a benchmark. We are excited about the opportunities presented by natural resources and energy and by the Canadian market in general.”
