CVC Capital Partners has appointed former Vodafone deputy CEO Sir Julian Horn-Smith as senior advisor. Sir Julian will work with the private equity firm’s telecoms, media and technology (TMT) team to advise on global investment activities in the sector.

Julian has spent more than 25 years in the telecommunications sector, most recently with Vodafone. Prior to holding the post of deputy CEO, he was group COO at the telecom giant and is considered to be the principal architect of the firm’s international strategy, according to CVC.

He was closely involved with many of Vodafone’s major transactions including the formation of Vodafone AirTouch in 1999 and the acquisition of Mannesmann in 2000 to create one of the world’s largest mobile telecommunications companies.

“We are very happy to have Sir Julian join us at CVC,” says Lorne Somerville, partner and head of TMT. “His history of successful corporate development globally in telecommunications is second to none and he brings a wealth of experience to the team.”

“CVC is a leader amongst the global private equity firms and the depth and breadth of its knowledge combined with its clear commitment to the telecoms sector makes it very well placed for investing in this environment. I look forward to being part of CVC’s future,” says Julian.

Founded in 1981, CVC currently has €16 billion of uninvested capital and the firm’s funds own 51 companies worldwide.
