French retail bank Credit Agricole has topped a new poll of the most popular online banking sites in Europe.

The comScore survey found that the bank’s online portal received 8.9 million visitors in February, beating UK lenders Lloyds Banking Group with 7.3 million visitors and the Royal Bank of Scotland, which clocked up seven million visits.

Europe’s biggest lender, HSBC, came seventh in the poll with 5.3 million visitors.

Overall, comScore said almost one-third of Europe’s online population – or 104 million internet users – logged on to a banking site during February.

Other financial institutions in the top 15 included Societe Generale, BNP Paribas, Barclays Bank and Citigroup.

Gian Fulgoni, comScore’s co-founder and chairman, says the current economic climate is making online banking increasingly important for consumers.

“The global recession has made people more aware of the value of money, more focused on their savings and more determined than ever to keep a close watch on their spending,” says Fulgoni.

Credit Agricole has 31 million retail banking customers and operations in over 20 countries. It is Europe’s biggest retail banking group in terms of revenue.
