Phil Brown, CEO, Clearstream Banking won Global Custodian’s 10th annual Industry Person of the Year award last night following a live vote from 300 attendees at the Leaders in Custody event.

Brown took to the stage amid a standing ovation and thanked colleagues and his peers for the recognition, as well as applauding his fellow nominees for the honour.

Brown was one of four shortlisted for the award alongside Fiona McNally of BNY, Isabelle Delorme of Euroclear and Mark Austin of Northern Trust.

Brown is known as one of the most influential figures in Europe’s securities services landscape and his nomination this year is a testament to both his ongoing work and efforts to better the industry and Clearstream’s achievements over the past 12 months.

From Clearstream’s truly innovative D7 platform to its digitisation of the Eurobond market – the CSD has been making plenty of moves this year to future proof itself and push the industry to new heights of efficiency.

On a more global scale, Brown has driven landmark initiatives including enabling the first use of offshore Chinese government bonds for initial margin segregation and completing Clearstream’s first tri-party repo transaction in Taiwan.

Over the past year, Brown has been central to the migration of the first global broker-dealer and Europe’s largest neo-broker clients to Clearstream’s European CSD platform.

He has also been a prominent voice on Europe’s transition to T+1 settlement, addressing the complexities of the continent’s multi-jurisdictional market structure.

Brown is a frequent thought leader in the biggest topics facing the securities services industry and his voice has been heard across multiple global conferences and associations throughout the past 12 months.

He adds the Industry Person of the Year accolade to his GC Legend award, which he received in 2018.
