Citi Match, Citigroups broker crossing network, became the largest dark pool of liquidity in Europe in February this year, according to the most recent survey by Rosenblatt Securities Inc, an independent boutique that surveys dark pools on a monthly basis, after executing 22.8 billion worth of trades during Q1 2011, up 90% from 12 billion during the same period in 2010.

During the first quarter of this year, the platform reported an average spread capture of more than 75%.

However, according to Rosenblatt Securities, many dark pools in Europe do not report figures and estimates the total volume may be 3 to 4%.

According to the same research, the difference between traded volumes on dark pools vary between the US and Europe.

Europe saw its share of trading in dark pools, climb in December to 2.1%, while the US saw its highest-ever share of stock trading take place in dark pools in December at 13.3%.
